ORIENTAL CLUB
Samuel Johnson said when one “is tired of London one has tired of life.”
The same, could be said of a recently refurbished private members club nestled in a discreet cul de sac near Bond Street. Founded 200 years ago by The Duke of Wellington, the iconic Oriental Club is host to a diverse community of around 3000 members, who enjoy its mix of cosmopolitan comfort and 18th Century elegance.
In February 2024, the Club opened its doors to a newly refurbished dining room. Victoria Jerram Lighting Design worked with Interior Designer Russell Sage Studio on the stylish yet sympathetic revitalisation of this room housed in the heart of the historic building.
This project shows how carefully considered lighting design can add elegance and character to the interior of a listed room, working harmoniously with architectural detailing.

Lighting layers allow the mood of the dining room to change as the sun sets and evening draws in. At the tables, low level, human scale lighting helps create a sense of intimacy between the seated guests, this softer mood enhanced by the addition of lampshades to the existing wall lights using warmer LED filament lamps, alongside mini spotlights to accentuate the decorative planting in the room.
Perhaps the true magic of this beautiful refurbishment is in the solution found to light the ornate plaster-work and panelling of the ceiling coffer, painted ceiling panels and columns. The room feels utterly revived by the inclusion of mini stem mounted spotlights to cascade light down the columns. Extensive mockups were done of the coffer and columns, to get the setting out precisely right for the manufacturing of the bespoke mounting blocks and mounting stems, so as to ensure an optimum throw of dramatic light across the ceiling space.
